How to Compare Cannabis Products Beyond THC Percentage

Compare cannabis by batch COA, dose, format, chemical profile, freshness, recalls, value, and context—not one headline THC percentage.

The dispensary shelf gives you a giant THC number because giant numbers are easy to compare. Twenty-eight looks better than twenty-two. Eighty-five looks better than seventy. Decision made.

Except those numbers may describe different batches, units, formats, routes, serving sizes, and laboratory measurements. A 25% flower, 80% concentrate, and 10 mg gummy are not contestants in one potency race. They are different tools.

THC matters. It is simply not enough.

My practical framework is Gate → Match → Rank:

  1. Gate: Is the exact batch traceable, tested, and not recalled?
  2. Match: Does its format, labeled dose, and timing fit your intended context?
  3. Rank: Among products that clear those gates, which has the most useful profile, freshness, and value?

This framework cannot predict exactly how a product will feel. Cannabis effects vary with dose, route, tolerance, setting, biology, and expectations. It can, however, replace a weak one-number decision with a documented comparison.

Compare in order: clear the safety and traceability gate, match the format to the situation, then rank quality and value.

Why THC Percentage Is a Weak Starting Line

THC percentage is a concentration by mass. It tells you how much measured or calculated total THC exists relative to the product’s weight. It does not tell you how much product you will use, how efficiently the route delivers it, how quickly effects may emerge, or how accurately the label describes the item in your hand.

A 2025 blinded analysis independently tested 178 flower and 99 concentrate products purchased from 52 Colorado dispensaries. Using the study’s ±15% accuracy threshold, 56.7% of flower products and 96% of concentrates were within range of their labels. Average observed potency was lower than labeled potency in both categories [Giordano et al., 2025]. That is one state and one study, not permission to assume every label is wrong. It is a reason to treat the last decimal place as less important than marketers do.

Gate One: Verify the Exact Batch

Safety and traceability are non-negotiable. A bargain cannot offset a mismatched COA or active recall.

Match the package to the COA

Scan the QR code or request the complete Certificate of Analysis. Then match:

  • batch, lot, or production identifier;
  • product name and form;
  • producer or manufacturer;
  • package size or matrix;
  • testing laboratory;
  • sample and analysis dates.

Read the safety panels, not just the green badge

Required panels differ by jurisdiction and product type. Depending on the market and matrix, the report may include pesticides, microbes, mycotoxins, heavy metals, residual solvents, water activity, foreign material, and cannabinoid potency.

Check official recalls by lot number

Search the regulator’s current recall page before buying an unfamiliar product, then save the batch number. California distinguishes mandatory recalls ordered by the Department of Cannabis Control from voluntary recalls initiated by a business. New York tells consumers to match both product and lot number, because a recall may affect selected lots rather than an entire brand.

If the product appears in an active recall, follow the regulator’s instructions. Do not rely on a brand’s social feed or assume a different flavor is unaffected. Match Two: Compare the Dose You Can Actually Use

Now compare products within the correct unit.

For mass-based products, nominal THC content is simple arithmetic:

product used in grams × THC fraction × 1,000 = milligrams of THC in the material

For example, 0.25 g of flower labeled 20% contains a nominal 50 mg of total THC in the plant material. That is not 50 mg absorbed: heating, sidestream loss, device efficiency, puffing, and incomplete consumption all intervene. The formula is a label comparison, not a dosing recommendation.

Edibles should be compared by milligrams per clearly separable serving, not package totals. A 100 mg chocolate scored into ten equal pieces and a 100 mg drink with no reliable way to measure tenths are not equally controllable. Read total THC versus delta-9 THC when labels mix raw acidic cannabinoids with active neutral forms.

Format changes the experience timeline

In a double-blind crossover study, 20 infrequent users received placebo, oral THC, and vaporized THC across six sessions. Oral and vaporized routes produced different blood-THC patterns, while higher studied doses in both routes impaired cognitive or psychomotor performance relative to placebo [Spindle et al., 2021]. The small, specific sample does not create a universal dosing chart. It shows why route and dose cannot be reduced to one percentage.

Rank Three: Compare the Chemical Profile—Carefully

Once two products are safe, traceable, and usable in your context, the COA’s broader chemistry can help distinguish them.

Start with:

  • total THC and total CBD, using the same units;
  • the THC:CBD balance rather than THC alone;
  • reported minor cannabinoids such as CBG, CBC, or THCV;
  • dominant and secondary terpenes, if the batch was tested;
  • whether the profile belongs to the exact batch.

Smith and colleagues analyzed cannabinoid and terpene data from 89,923 commercial flower samples across six states. They found repeatable chemical types, but commercial “indica,” “hybrid,” and “sativa” labels did not consistently capture that chemistry. Even a dominant-terpene grouping separated chemical diversity better than those familiar labels [Smith et al., 2022]. Importantly, the authors did not show that a specific profile guarantees a specific human effect.

If two batches have different terpene panels, they are chemically different comparisons even if the strain name is identical. If neither has a terpene panel, do not invent one from a strain database. Aroma can offer information about the flower in front of you, but it is not a quantitative assay or an effects guarantee.

Rank Four: Freshness and Physical Condition

Freshness affects the product you actually receive, not merely its marketing story. Check the harvest, production, test, package, and best-by dates available for that format.

Vermont’s 2026 labeling guidance illustrates the distinction: flower labels include harvested-on and packed-on dates, while manufactured products include a packed-on date and a best-if-used-by date. New Jersey’s 2025 testing guidance requires stability testing at defined intervals to evaluate how product quality changes over time. Those are state-specific rules, but the consumer lesson travels well: shelf life should rest on dates and stability evidence, not a budtender’s guess.

Compare like with like. For flower, examine seal integrity, excessive dryness, visible moisture, and off odors. For a vape, inspect the package and hardware for leakage, damage, or tampering. For edibles, check ingredient, allergen, storage, and expiration information. Do not open sealed products in a store unless staff explicitly allows it.

Rank Five: Calculate Value Without Rewarding Potency

Price per gram is useful only among reasonably similar products. Price per labeled milligram of THC often rewards the exact potency race we are trying to escape.

A better budgeting metric is cost per planned session:

package price ÷ number of sessions you realistically expect = cost per planned session

A fictional $40 eighth used in 0.25 g sessions provides about 14 sessions, or $2.86 each. A $24 ten-piece package used one piece per session costs $2.40 each. That does not make the edible “better”; the formats have different timing, measurement, and contexts. The calculation only exposes what the sticker price hides.

Also include:

  • equipment or replacement hardware;
  • product likely to expire before use;
  • unusable stems, leaking oil, or difficult portions;
  • a premium for batch-specific terpene data or better traceability;
  • taxes and discounts applied to the final price.

Avoid stocking up solely because a product is cheap. A stale ounce that no longer suits you can cost more per useful session than a fresh, smaller package. For market context—not a promise about local prices—see what weed costs in 2026.

Put It Together: A Two-Product Worksheet

Do not total everything into one pseudo-scientific score. Safety cannot be averaged against price. Use gates first, then tradeoffs.

Is higher THC ever the right comparison factor?

Yes, when all other relevant variables are similar and a higher measured concentration specifically fits your plan. It should still be evaluated with the batch COA, format, controllable amount, tolerance, and context—not treated as an automatic quality grade.

Can terpene percentages predict how a product will feel?

Not reliably for an individual. A terpene panel describes chemistry and can help you compare batches. Human effects also depend on cannabinoids, dose, route, tolerance, biology, expectations, and setting. Use profiles to form testable hypotheses, not guarantees.

Should I compare flower and concentrates by price per milligram of THC?

Usually not. Delivery, typical use amount, equipment, and product losses differ too much. Cost per planned session is more practical, provided you keep the routes’ different timelines and experiences separate.

What if the package has no QR code?

Ask the licensed retailer for the batch-specific COA and check your jurisdiction’s access rules. Do not substitute a generic brand report or a COA from another batch.

Does a passing COA mean a product cannot be recalled later?

No. Regulators can act after discovering unreliable testing, contamination, misbranding, or other defects. Keep the lot number and check official recall notices, especially if a retailer or regulator contacts you.

How much should freshness outweigh a terpene profile?

There is no universal weight. First reject damaged, expired, recalled, or untraceable products. Among acceptable options, favor the product whose dates, storage, tested chemistry, format, and package size best fit how soon and how consistently you will use it.
