What to Do With Already Vaped Bud (AVB): 10 Real Uses

Your vaporizer doesn't extract everything. Here's what's left in spent AVB, how to judge it by colour, and 10 ways to actually use it.

There is a jar somewhere in your kitchen full of brown, crumbly, faintly toasted-smelling material that used to be flower. You keep adding to it because throwing it away feels wasteful, and using it feels like a project you will get to eventually.

That jar is worth more than you think — and also less than the internet tells you.

Already Vaped Bud (AVB, sometimes written ABV for “already been vaped”) is what your dry herb vaporizer leaves behind. It looks spent. Often it is not. And because it was held at temperature for several minutes, it arrives in your kitchen having already done the step that trips up most home cooks: it is decarboxylated.

What is actually left in AVB

Vaporizing is an extraction, and every extraction is incomplete.

The clearest measurement comes from a 2016 in vitro validation study at the University of Bern. Lanz and colleagues ran THC-type and CBD-type cannabis through five commercial vaporizers and measured what reached the vapour. Across the four electrically driven devices, total THC recovery ranged from 54.6% to 82.7% — 58.4% for the Volcano Medic, 66.8% for the Plenty, 82.7% for the Arizer Solo, 54.6% for the DaVinci. Total CBD recovery was lower throughout, 51.4% to 70.0%.

Read that carefully, because it gets mangled constantly. It says roughly a sixth to a half of the cannabinoid load did not reach the vapour. It does not say that remainder is sitting in your jar. Some condensed on the bowl, screen, stem and tubing; some degraded. What survived in the plant material is a subset of the missing portion, not all of it.

An earlier Volcano evaluation by Hazekamp and colleagues found about 54% of loaded THC reached the balloon, and that roughly 35% of inhaled THC was exhaled again. Different question, same theme: the path from bowl to bloodstream loses material at every step.

Honest summary: your AVB usually still holds a meaningful amount of THC, and nobody can tell you how much without testing it.

The part that matters: it’s already decarbed

The same Lanz study also ran HPLC on the residue left in the vaporizer to calculate decarboxylation efficiency. For the temperature-controlled electric devices it was at least 97.3% for THC and 94.6% for CBD.

That is the whole ballgame for edibles. Raw cannabis contains THCA, not THC — an acid form that is not intoxicating until heat drives off a carboxyl group. It is why every butter recipe opens with an oven step, why getting the decarb right is where first-time edibles quietly fail, and it is worth understanding the underlying chemistry and the case for the acid forms themselves.

Your vaporizer already did it. AVB needs no oven stage. Baking it again activates nothing — it degrades what survived.

One nuance: decarboxylation follows first-order kinetics, and rates differ by cannabinoid. Wang and colleagues measured rate constants for THCA-A at roughly twice those of CBDA and CBGA. Vape a CBD-forward cultivar and expect a slightly larger share of unconverted acid in the leftovers.

Reading your AVB by colour

There is no published potency-by-colour scale. What follows is a practical heuristic, grounded in one real relationship: the hotter and longer you run the bowl, the more you extract and the darker the residue. Treat it as a rough sort, not a measurement.

One caution about “just vape it hotter to finish it off.” Pomahacova and colleagues compared Volcano vapour against cannabis cigarette smoke and found the cannabinoid-to-by-product ratio significantly better at 200°C and 230°C than in smoke — and worst at 170°C. That is one device, in vitro, so do not over-read it. But it does undercut the assumption that lower is automatically cleaner on every axis. For the wider picture, see vaping vs smoking.

Why it tastes bad, and the cold-water fix

Terpenes are the most volatile compounds in flower and they leave first, which is why AVB retains none of the myrcene, limonene or caryophyllene character the fresh bud had. What remains is gently roasted plant matter: pigments, sugars, salts, and a lot of bitter residue.

The standard fix is a cold-water cure. It works — but not for the reason usually given. The folk explanation is “it removes the chlorophyll,” and chlorophyll is a poor candidate, because its long phytol tail makes it strongly lipophilic and poorly water-soluble. What a cold soak actually removes is the water-soluble fraction: sugars, salts, some pigments and their breakdown products, and much of the soluble bitterness. Cannabinoids stay put for the opposite reason — THC is highly lipophilic with very low aqueous solubility, a property characterised in detail by Garrett and Hunt in 1974.

The method:

  1. Cover the AVB with cold water in a jar. Cold matters; warm water softens the plant matter and makes filtering miserable.
  2. Cap, shake, refrigerate 12–24 hours.
  3. Pour through a coffee filter or fine cloth. The water will be alarmingly brown. That is the point.
  4. Repeat 2–4 times, until the water runs from tea-coloured to pale straw.
  5. Squeeze gently, spread thin, and dry completely — a few hours near a fan, or overnight at room temperature. Do not oven-dry above about 90°C.

Expect to lose a third to a half of the mass and almost none of the potency, because most of what you washed away was never psychoactive. The result is a pale, nearly flavourless powder that disappears into food — the difference between a brownie that tastes like a brownie and one that tastes like a bong. Storing it

AVB is more fragile than flower: no intact trichome heads left to protect anything, unpredictable moisture, and it goes musty fast if jarred damp. Dry it fully before storage, keep it in airtight glass somewhere dark and cool — same principles as storing flower, minus the humidity pack, because you want AVB dry rather than conditioned. Date the jar, and keep sessions separate where you can: tipping a light-brown low-temp batch into a jar of near-black material averages your potency down and destroys any chance of estimating a dose. The dosing problem, stated honestly

AVB potency is highly variable and impossible to eyeball. Two jars that look identical can differ by a factor of three. Here is the arithmetic, shown so you can see where the uncertainty enters.

Say you vaped 1 gram of flower labelled 20% total THC — about 200 mg of THC going in. If your device sent 60% into the vapour, mid-range for the electric units Lanz measured, then 80 mg did not reach your lungs. But an unknown share of that 80 mg is on the screen, stem and tubing, and another share degraded under heat. What remains in the plant material is some fraction of 80 mg that nobody has measured for your device, your temperature, your session.

So the only defensible approach is:

  1. Assume a wide band. A gram of good light-brown AVB is somewhere in the tens of milligrams of THC; a gram of near-black AVB may be nothing at all.
  2. Test with a deliberately small dose. Make the batch, eat a twentieth of it, and wait two full hours before touching more. The 2-hour rule exists for exactly this.
  3. Calibrate from that, not from a recipe. Once one small dose tells you what the batch does, edible dosing math lets you portion the rest.
  4. Test properly if it matters. For a large batch or a medical reason, test the potency at home instead of guessing.

Oral cannabis is not the same drug as inhaled cannabis. First-pass liver metabolism converts a substantial share of THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is why edibles land harder and last longer than the milligram count suggests. 10 things to do with AVB

Ordered roughly from least to most effort.

1. The firecracker

Spread nut butter on a cracker or bread, sprinkle 0.3–0.5 g of AVB over it, add a second cracker, eat. Because AVB is already decarboxylated there is genuinely no cooking step — the purest expression of AVB’s one real advantage. The fat carries the cannabinoids, and eating with a meal helps absorption (why an empty stomach changes things). Downside: you taste every bit of it. Cure it first if you can.

2. Capsules

The most dignified option. Size 00 capsules hold roughly 0.5–0.7 g of loose dry AVB, and a cheap filling tray makes 24 in a couple of minutes. Add a few drops of olive or MCT oil per capsule — cannabinoids need fat to absorb, and dry powder gives them none. 3. AVB butter

The workhorse. Identical to ordinary cannabutter with one change: no decarb.

  • Melt 250 g butter with 250 ml water over the lowest heat you have; the water is a thermal buffer that stops the butter scorching.
  • Add 15–30 g AVB.
  • Hold at 70–85°C for 2–3 hours, stirring occasionally. Do not simmer — AVB has nothing left to protect it and overheating costs potency.
  • Strain through cheesecloth, squeezing gently; hard squeezing pushes bitter plant matter through.
  • Chill. The butter sets on top; discard the dark water beneath.

4. AVB coconut oil

Same method, better chemistry for many uses. High saturated-fat content makes it an efficient carrier, it sets solid so it portions cleanly, and it is the right base if you are heading toward capsules or topicals. Use refined unless you want the coconut flavour. Follow the coconut oil recipe, again minus the decarb.

5. AVB peanut butter

Underrated. Peanut butter is already a fat emulsion, already strongly flavoured, and already eaten by the spoonful — close to ideal for AVB’s texture problem.

Warm a jar of natural peanut butter in a water bath to about 70°C, stir in 10–20 g of cured AVB, hold an hour with occasional stirring, cool. It never strains, so the AVB stays in, which makes portioning by weight your dosing control. Label the jar unambiguously and keep it away from anyone who did not sign up for it.

6. Brownies and dense bakes

AVB works better in dense, dark, strongly flavoured bakes than delicate ones. Cocoa and brown sugar mask what is left of the taste, and dense batters keep the material suspended instead of letting it settle.

Either bake with AVB butter from method 3, or fold 5–15 g of cured AVB straight into the batter with the dry ingredients — cruder, but it works, because the material is already active. 7. Tincture

Alcohol extracts efficiently and gives you something dosable by the drop rather than the spoonful — a real advantage when potency is unknown.

Cover cured AVB with high-proof grain alcohol in a sealed jar, shake daily, leave 2–4 weeks in a dark cupboard, strain through a coffee filter. Dose sublingually or add to food. 8. AVB honey

Honey is nearly all sugar and water, so it is a poor solvent on its own — which is why good infused honey carries a little added fat or lecithin to do the work. Warm to about 70°C in a water bath, stir in cured AVB, hold 30–45 minutes, strain through a fine sieve while warm. Full method in the infused honey recipe; the same logic covers maple syrup. 9. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate

Steeping AVB in hot water extracts very little, because cannabinoids are essentially insoluble in water. The fix is fat: simmer it in whole milk, cream or coconut milk, or drop a knob of butter in the mug, then brew. 10. Topical salve

The right home for a jar you cannot confidently dose. Infuse AVB into coconut or olive oil (method 4), blend the strained oil with beeswax at roughly 4:1, add essential oils if you like, cool in tins. When to just compost it

  • Near-black and ashy. You ran to combustion. Little is left.
  • Musty or sour, or showing any fuzz. Jarred damp, grew something. Never cook with mouldy plant material.
  • Loose in a drawer for a year. Cannabinoids degrade with heat, light and oxygen, and AVB has no structural protection left.

There is a quieter case too: if you have hoarded AVB for two years and never made anything, the jar is not an asset, it is a chore you keep deferring. Make one batch of butter, or bin it.

What AVB teaches about everything else

AVB is a good teacher because it removes what people normally lean on. No strain name on the jar. No percentage on a label. Just brown material of uncertain strength, where the only way to know what it does is to take a small amount and pay attention.

That is a more honest version of what is true for cannabis generally. Strain names are marketing at least as often as genetics (the argument here), and THC percentage predicts a session poorly. What predicts your experience is the full chemistry of what you took and how your body responds — which is why we sort cultivars by High Family rather than indica-versus-sativa folklore.

Practically: note what you vaped and how the leftovers behaved. A heavy relaxing cultivar like Granddaddy Purple or Bubba Kush tends to give an edible leaning the same way — sleepy, body-focused, amplified by oral metabolism. A balanced cultivar like Blue Dream or a citrus-forward Jack Herer gives leftovers with a different character, though far less of one than the fresh flower had — the terpenes are the first thing your vaporizer takes, and they do not come back.

FAQ

Is AVB less potent than regular flower?

Yes, substantially — but not zero. The Lanz recovery figures imply a meaningful fraction of cannabinoids never reaches the vapour, though how much survives in your jar depends on device, temperature and session length. Light-brown AVB is worth using; near-black usually is not.

Do I need to decarb AVB before making edibles?

No, and this is AVB’s main advantage. Lanz and colleagues measured decarboxylation efficiency in the vaporizer residue at 97.3% or better for THC in temperature-controlled electric devices. An extra oven stage only degrades what survived.

How much AVB equals one dose?

There is no honest answer, and be suspicious of anyone who gives you one. Make a batch, eat a very small portion, wait two full hours, calibrate from what happens. Potency varies by a factor of several between jars that look identical.

Does the cold-water cure reduce potency?

Very little. Cannabinoids are strongly lipophilic and barely water-soluble, so a cold soak removes water-soluble sugars, salts and pigments while leaving the actives behind. You lose a lot of mass and almost no strength.

Can I re-vape AVB?

If it is still greenish or very light brown, yes — a second pass at a higher temperature pulls more out and leaves the material genuinely spent. Once it is dark brown you are mostly inhaling toasted plant matter.

Is AVB safe to eat?

For ordinary vaped flower it is the same plant material you were already inhaling from, minus most of the volatiles. The real risks are mould from damp storage and accidental overdose from guessing. Do not use AVB that smells musty, and never dose by eye.
