You scan the QR code on a jar of flower. The certificate of analysis says the batch passed. Then you notice the lab tested it nine months ago.

Here is the short answer: a COA does not become meaningless on one universal birthday. Its age changes how confidently you can use it. The batch number tells you whether the report belongs to your product. The test date tells you when a sample represented that batch. The package, harvest, manufacture, and expiration dates tell you how much life happened before and after that snapshot.
For most shoppers, an older report is first a freshness and relevance warning, not automatic proof that a sealed product is unsafe. A mismatched lot number, expired product, damaged seal, missing safety panels, or generic COA is a stronger reason to walk away.

The four dates are not interchangeable
Treat the dates on a cannabis product like a timeline, not four versions of the same fact.

Some COAs show three laboratory dates: sample received, testing completed, and report issued. The first anchors the physical sample; the last shows when the result became official. If only one appears, do not assume which event it represents.
Packaging can happen before or after compliance sampling, depending on the product and local rules. The order alone is not a verdict. The product, producer, lot ID, and sample identity must connect cleanly.
What an old COA can and cannot tell you
A valid COA is evidence about a sample from a particular batch at a particular time. Required potency, moisture, contaminant, solvent, and terpene panels vary by product and jurisdiction. Three limits matter.
1. The product keeps changing after the test
Cannabis is chemically active after harvest. Light, oxygen, heat, grinding, and time can change cannabinoids and volatile compounds. In a one-year storage experiment, Milay and colleagues found the largest cannabinoid changes at 25°C among the temperatures tested. Terpenoid concentrations declined rapidly under every tested condition, while whole inflorescences stored at 4°C best preserved the studied profile [Milay et al., 2020].
An older controlled study likewise found that light was the largest single factor in cannabinoid loss under its test conditions, while air oxidation also produced significant losses [Fairbairn et al., 1976]. A later four-year study specifically examined how time and storage conditions affected marijuana and hashish composition [Zamengo et al., 2019].
That does not make refrigeration right for every product; condensation, ingredients, packaging, and label instructions still matter. The point is simpler: the lab result freezes a moment; the package does not freeze chemistry.

2. One sample is not every bud in the batch
Age is not the only source of uncertainty. Cannabis flower varies within a plant and across plants in the same batch. A 2025 study using one analytical method reported total-THC spreads of 3.1 to 6.7 percentage points across nine commercial batches, plus measurable differences between upper and lower plant material [Cleary et al., 2025].

3. A passing safety panel is not a lifetime warranty
A pesticide or heavy-metal result describes what the lab found. Those contaminants do not appear because a PDF aged, but a COA cannot guarantee perfect sampling or rule out later package damage.

So, when is a COA too old?
There is no national answer. The most honest consumer rule is a graduated one:

These are shopping heuristics, not safety limits or legal deadlines. A six-month-old flower COA attached to well-sealed, properly stored inventory may be more informative than a six-week-old report linked to the wrong lot. A shelf-stable capsule and a delicate live-resin product should not share the same freshness rule.
State rules demonstrate why a universal cutoff would be misleading. New York requires the expiration date for an adult-use product to be based on available stability data, and the stability evidence must fit the formulation. Washington currently says a COA for regulated product not already transferred to a retail location expires 12 calendar months after issuance. Vermont’s January 2026 guidance distinguishes the packed-on date from a “best if used by” date and requires access to the packaged product’s test results.

The five-step COA age check
Use this workflow at the counter or after scanning a package.
1. Match the batch before reading anything else
Compare the lot or batch number on the package with the COA character by character. Also compare the producer, product name, product type, and—in a multi-SKU line—the flavor or formulation.

2. Build the product timeline
Write the dates in order:
- Harvest or manufacture
- Sample received
- Testing completed or report issued
- Packaged
- Best-by or expiration
Requirements differ, but missing dates reduce what you can infer. A report date without a harvest, manufacture, or package date tells you when paperwork appeared—not the material’s age.
3. Apply the right product clock

Live resin, rosin, and terpene-forward vapes: volatile aroma compounds make storage and temperature history especially important. A full safety panel may remain informative while the sensory profile drifts.
Distillate, oils, and capsules: formulation, carrier oil, container, oxidation control, and stability-backed expiration matter more than flower-style freshness rules.
Edibles and beverages: use the labeled expiration and food-safety cues. Do not extend a product’s life because its cannabinoid COA once passed.
4. Inspect the container, not just the certificate
Look for a broken seal, leakage, swollen food packaging, condensation, visible mold, severe dryness, or improper storage. A beautiful PDF cannot rescue compromised packaging.

5. Decide whether the report is complete enough
A potency-only page is not the same as a compliance COA. Look for the lab identity and license, sample ID, batch ID, dates, methods, limits, and all panels required for that product in your market. “Pass” without analytes or reporting limits tells you less than it appears to.

Red flags that matter more than a month count
Walk away—or ask for a different unit—when you find:
- A lot or batch number that does not match
- A QR code that opens a generic brand page instead of batch-specific results
- A product beyond its labeled expiration date
- A broken, leaking, swollen, or visibly compromised package
- A COA that omits the laboratory identity, sample ID, or basic dates
- Potency results presented without the relevant contaminant panels
- A product or formulation on the package that differs from the report
- A report image that looks edited, cropped, or stripped of verification details
- No explanation for a very old report on a supposedly fresh, terpene-rich product

Make the evidence useful after purchase
The most valuable COA connects a real product to your real experience—not merely to the highest THC number.
