Yes, neighbors can smell weed from another apartment. But the odor usually travels around and through openings in a wall assembly, not straight through an intact wall. Odor-bearing air can pass through door gaps, utility openings, shafts, ducts, halls, and windows. Wind, fans, and the building’s stack effect decide which way it goes.

Five forces that move odor between apartments

  1. Mechanical exhaust. A bathroom fan, range hood, dryer, or central exhaust removes air. In a leaky building, replacement air may come from a hallway, shaft, or neighboring unit.

  2. Supply and return imbalance. A unit with excess supply air can push air out. A unit with excess exhaust can pull neighboring air in. Poor balance can move contaminants.

  3. Stack effect. In cold weather, warm air rises through stairs, elevator shafts, and pipe chases. That can pull air inward on lower floors and push it outward higher up. Taller buildings and larger temperature differences strengthen the effect.

  4. Wind. Wind creates positive pressure on one face of a building and suction on another. It can carry odor from a balcony or open window into a unit several floors away—or reverse a route that behaved differently yesterday.

  5. Doors and people. Opening a door connects the unit to the corridor. Missing door sweeps and changing stair or elevator pressures can make that hallway a transfer route.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory guidance warns that poorly planned exhaust can drive air into corridors or neighboring units. In other words, “turn on every fan” is not universal advice in multifamily housing. Ventilation needs clean replacement air and a known destination.

Why Cannabis Odor Travels So Far

Fresh flower emits many volatile compounds, and terpenes do not fully explain its skunky note. Oswald and colleagues identified a family of prenylated volatile sulfur compounds tied to cannabis’s characteristic aroma (Oswald et al., 2021). Such pungent compounds help explain why a nose may notice cannabis at a low concentration.

Stored flower can also be a source without anyone smoking. A loose bag or frequently opened container may release enough volatile material to be noticeable nearby. Proper cannabis storage protects quality and reduces unintended odor, but storage practices do not make prohibited possession or use permissible.

Treat these clues as hypotheses, not proof. Airflow changes throughout the day, and cooking, incense, fragrance, skunks, or another apartment can complicate attribution.

Smelling Weed Does Not Prove Someone Is High

The nose answers one question: “Can I detect a recognizable odor?” It does not answer “How much THC is here?”, “Who produced it?”, or “Is anyone impaired?”

A pungent odor may come from flower, old residue, outdoor smoke, or air that crossed more than one unit. Its intensity varies with chemistry, personal sensitivity, adaptation, and the air route. It is not a calibrated exposure measurement.

In a Johns Hopkins study, nonsmokers spent one hour in a chamber with six people smoking high-THC cannabis. Under an extreme unventilated condition, researchers found detectable cannabinoids and mild effects in some participants. With 11 air changes per hour, exposure was much lower. Researchers found no sedative effects, performance impairment, or positive urine screens at the reported cutoffs (Herrmann et al., 2015). This does not prove ordinary apartment odor is harmless. It shows that conditions and dose matter, while odor alone cannot establish intoxication.

Do not reverse the logic either. The absence of a strong smell does not prove clean air. People adapt to odors, filters may reduce some gases more effectively than particles or vice versa, and different products emit different mixtures.

Odor and Secondhand Smoke Are Different Complaints

If cannabis is burned indoors, the issue is not merely odor. Nguyen and Hammond measured fine particles during eight social bong-smoking sessions in one living room. Levels rose sharply and declined slowly. The study was small and limited to one room, but it shows that water filtration does not make indoor smoke disappear (Nguyen and Hammond, 2022). An observational study by Posis and colleagues also found higher particle counts in homes reporting indoor cannabis smoking. Its child-health endpoint did not reach statistical significance, so it cannot prove that the reported smoking caused those health outcomes (Posis et al., 2019). That null result deserves to be stated, not buried.

What Actually Helps—Without Playing Hide-and-Seek

This is not a guide to defeating a lease inspection or concealing prohibited activity. The goal is to prevent unwanted emissions from reaching other people.

If the odor starts in your home

Do not smoke indoors. EPA puts source reduction first. Filtration and ventilation are supplements. A different room, fragrance spray, or a bathroom fan does not turn a shared building into private airspace.

Use cannabis only where it is legal and expressly permitted by the property rules. A designated outdoor area can reduce indoor accumulation, but smoke near doors, air intakes, balconies, or open windows can still enter someone else’s home. Respectful use is part of basic cannabis etiquette.

If lawful and appropriate, a non-combustible format avoids combustion smoke but brings different risks. Compare flower, edibles, and concentrates, the beginner edible waiting rule, and cannabis capsules. Ask a clinician before changing a medical regimen.

If odor is entering your home

Document the pattern before making accusations. If contact feels safe, try: “Cannabis odor enters my bathroom most evenings around eight. I think the exhaust path may connect our units. Would you help me trace it?” Describe what reaches your space, not what you assume about another person.

If direct contact feels unsafe, or a health condition makes the issue urgent, contact management. Share the log and ask staff to check the air path and policy. Health Canada also recommends reviewing the lease or condo bylaws. It advises raising smoke seepage with an owner or landlord before modifying a unit.

Do not cover supply vents, disable alarms, tape over required exhaust, or alter a fire-rated wall. Those moves can create moisture, carbon monoxide, electrical, ventilation, or fire-safety problems.

What an air purifier can and cannot do

A purifier is a supporting actor. For smoke particles, EPA recommends a smoke clean-air delivery rate sized for the room; HEPA is commonly used. Odor compounds are gases, so they require activated carbon or another gas sorbent. EPA says carbon works best when a filter contains substantial material. No common consumer rating matches particle CADR for gas removal.

That means a thin carbon-coated sheet may help briefly without solving a continuous source. Filters also saturate and need replacement. A purifier in the receiving apartment cannot repair a pressure imbalance or seal a chase.

Avoid ozone generators and “ionic” products that intentionally or incidentally produce ozone. EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant and advises that source control and clean-air ventilation come first. Adding a reactive gas to cover another indoor-air problem is not a sophisticated solution.

Particle filtration and gas adsorption are different jobs; neither replaces controlling the source or fixing the building air path.

When the Building Needs a Professional

Management or an indoor-air/HVAC professional should investigate a recurring odor at one opening. The same applies if it changes with mechanical cycles, affects several units, or moves between floors. Tests may include pressure checks, tracer methods, duct inspection, and blower-door testing.

A technician may balance ventilation, repair a backdraft damper or duct, or seal penetrations with a fire-rated assembly. More outdoor air is not automatically better if it creates the wrong pressure. PNNL guidance suggests compartmentalization can help control cross-unit odor and contaminant transfer.

Residents should report symptoms such as trouble breathing to a medical professional and urgent breathing difficulty to emergency services. A building complaint log is useful, but it is not a medical assessment.

Lease Rules and Cannabis Laws Are Separate Questions

Legal possession does not override a property’s rules. A lease, condo, hotel, or housing program may ban smoking or cannabis use. Rules vary by property, city, state, and program.

Read the current lease and building policy rather than relying on a neighbor’s summary. Gas may diffuse through a porous material. Yet apartment complaints are more likely to involve airflow through gaps, cavities, doors, shafts, ducts, or windows. Inspect those paths first.

Why can I smell weed through an electrical outlet?

The box may open into a leaky wall cavity. Pressure can pull odor-bearing air around it. Do not spray, foam, or insert anything into an outlet. Ask qualified staff to inspect it and preserve its electrical and fire rating.

Will opening a window keep neighbors from smelling it?
