What the Science Supports—and What Is Inference

There is very little peer-reviewed research that tests cannabis-joint canoeing directly. The best physical model comes from smoldering research and studies of paper-wrapped tobacco cigarettes. That is useful, but it is an analogy, not proof that every result transfers unchanged to cannabis flower.

Smoldering is a slow combustion front moving through porous fuel. A major review explains that it depends on oxygen reaching the reactive surface while the system retains enough heat to continue [Torero et al., 2020]. A joint is also a paper-wrapped bed of porous plant material, so it is reasonable to infer that local differences in permeability, oxygen access, and heat loss can bend its burn front. Check flower condition, not a mythical perfect number

Flower should separate evenly without turning to dust or sticking in wet clumps. A jar reading does not guarantee moisture is uniform inside every bud. Do not smoke flower that smells musty or shows fuzzy growth.

Paper is part of the combustion system, not neutral packaging. Start with a flat, undamaged sheet. Avoid deep creases, soaked gum, and a heavy stack of overlapping paper. You may see advice to wet the fast side with saliva. Moisture can temporarily slow paper, but it is imprecise, unhygienic when sharing, and does not repair the internal gradient.
